Our: Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP)


This program assists low-income individuals that may have difficulty adhering to his/her tax filing requirement.

Information

There are a few things that you should be aware of in regards to this program.

  1. It is independantly administered (even though the registration is completed through our Member Registration.),
  2. service is free to individuals that meet Canada's Revenue Agency(C.R.A.)'s indicated income thresholds, and
  3. the process is completed by a volunteer income tax preparer.

The following information below applies to you, your spouse (or common-law partner), and any dependant(s).

Eligibility

The CRA has guidelines for the administration of the CVITP and you should review the information contained in their About Free Tax Clinic(s) page.

Authorizations

Prior to completing the Income Tax and Benefit Return package for you (and your partner/spouse),
we will need your (and your partner's/spouse's) authorization on a couple forms...

Important
It is understood that by your authorization of the TIS60, You are giving consent to the volunteer to complete the tax return filing process to the best of her/his abilities, based on the information that you are providing at the point of completing this process.

Although, you are more than welcome to fill out this form in advance, the volunteer can also have this form printed out for you prior to filing the return* and it will have most of the necessary fields already populated, and you will just need to make your authorization.

* = provided the volunteer has access to a functioning printer with adequate paper and ink!

Source Documentation

There are some required source documentation that we need prior to the completion of your report, which include...

  1. Two(2) pieces of Government Issued Identification,
  2. The NOA/NOR for the last tax year that was filed with the CRA,
  3. All Income slips related to the tax year(s) being completed, and
  4. All relevant expense (ITC: Income Tax Credit) slips related to the tax year(s) being completed.

Report Completion

Once completed, there are processing periods that you may not be aware of.

  • If the return was efiled: then the NOA should be remitted in under two(2) weeks/ten(10) business days.
    Sometimes instantaneous if the taxpayer has a registered CRA MyAccount.
  • Mailed to the Tax Center: can be a month to even three(3) depending on the volume of hardcopy returns received by CRA's divisional processing department.
    This also does not account for the assessment verification processes.
